Occupational Physiotherapy

Rapid Access Physiotherapy is a spend to save project, aimed at reducing musculoskeletal related absence

  • Already absent from work.
  • Likely to be absent from work
  • At further risk of injury due to reduced capability
  • To reduce acute injuries progressing to chronic injuries, allowing injuries to be treated quickly and effectively, improving outcome and potentially decreasing the number of treatment sessions necessary
  • Preventing secondary conditions developing which may become more problematic than the primary injury
  • Improve the general well-being of the employee (a healthy employee is a more productive one)
  • Direct referral to Occupational Health Physiotherapists. This would prevent a delay in treatment and therefore reduce the overall cost by;
  • Eliminating the need for referral to the Occupational Physician, Occupational Advisor or GP
  • Reduce the amount of sickness absence before treatment
  • Prevent conditions reaching the chronic phase (which are inherently harder to treat thereby needing more treatment sessions).
  • Proactively target musculoskeletal injuries by working with the key sickness absence manager to pick up employees as.
  • By allowing the referral to be sent directly to the appropriate clinical specialist i.e. musculoskeletal referrals to be sent direct to the Occupational Health  Physiotherapist, the customer would benefit from:
  • A reduction in time from injury to referral and in turn assessment / reporting
  • A reduction in long periods of sick leave prior to treatment
  • The prevention of acute conditions becoming chronic which ensures the most efficient cost effective service.
  • Useful reporting ensuring the managers are able to maintain efficient running of their departments. Following a detailed assessment by the Occupational Physiotherapist, the Managers will be kept informed (through the initial assessment, update report or discharge report) on each step of the employees’ fitness for work, any work restrictions and any on-going management.
  • Proactively targeting long term musculoskeletal sickness absence as a priority, to undertake a physical examination in order to allow the complete management of each case and ensure the most appropriate action can be taken to move each case forward. In this respect, as well as liaising with the Occupational Health  Physician and/or Occupational Health  Advisor regularly (to ensure the employee receives a holistic approach), combined meetings are advised for those employees on long term musculoskeletal sick. It is essential that effective communications are maintained between the Occupational Health  Physiotherapist, Occupational Health Physician, the employee and the Manager to ensure consistent and comprehensive management of each long term musculoskeletal absence case.
