“The statistics are clear, sickness absence costs: UK Plc spend over £12 billion a year and
Employers £495 a year in direct costs for every worker employed. Indirect costs are probably considerably more (CBI 2005 statistics).”
“Everyone at work will probably need to take sick leave at some point during their working lives and in most cases this lasts only a few days. But long-term sickness absence can have devastating effects on the performance of your business and the health and well-being of your employees.”

Prevention of needless injuries not only saves money but maintains a healthy work-life balance.
Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are the most common occupational illness in Great Britain, affecting 1.0 million people a year. They include problems such as low back pain, joint injuries and repetitive strain injuries of various sorts.
People are individual, they have different physical limitations, capabilities and importantly different levels of knowledge on workplace safety and personal injury prevention.
“80% of accidents are attributed to human error.”

REDUCE THE RISK
The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 (MHO) came into force on 1 January 1993 and set no specific requirements such as weight limits.
An ergonomic assessment is necessary and based on a range of relevant factors is used to determine the risk of injury and point the way to remedial action.
The Regulations establish the following clear hierarchy of control measures:
1. Avoid hazardous manual handling operations so far as is reasonably practicable.
2. Make a suitable and sufficient assessment of any hazardous manual handling operations that cannot be avoided.
3. Reduce the risk of injury from those operations so far as is reasonably practicable.
